The Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) today received $1,946,500 from casino profits to be used to benefit Saskatchewan people and communities.
The CIF was created by the Government of Saskatchewan to distribute a portion of casino profits to benefit Saskatchewan people and communities. Since 1996, the CIF has provided assistance to local groups to support a variety of community services. In 2002, the CIF also expanded to include Centennial initiatives.
"The Community Initiative Fund ensures that Saskatchewan communities receive tangible benefits from casino profits," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "The fund provides support for important social needs, such as vulnerable children, youth and families, problem gambling prevention and treatment, and health care."
To date this year, the CIF has funded 267 projects to various community groups. Some of those projects include $15,000 to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Yorkton, $13,068 to the Prince Albert Children Haven Crisis Centre, $14,850 to Planned Parenthood in Regina, and $15,000 to the Churchill Learning Centre in La Ronge.
Each year the CIF fund provides approximately $7 million to support worthy projects in communities throughout the province.
The fund is managed by an independent eight-member Board of Trustees operating "arms length" from government. The trustees all have extensive backgrounds as community volunteers.
