It is an honour to bring you warm greetings on behalf of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, at this special time of year.I wish to speak briefly about gifts. Not the ones that are exchanged in bright wrapping and colourful bows, but true gifts. The Canadians who served in the world wars, Korea, and in peacekeeping missions gave the ultimate gift. They risked their lives to defend freedom and justice and the values we hold dear. As we gather with family and friends this holiday season, there are Canadian military who are separated from their loved ones for the high purpose of peacekeeping – to bring stability and hope to those who live in chaos … what a breathtaking gift!
Our upcoming provincial centennial provides us with the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the gift called Saskatchewan. We are members of one of the world's most privileged nations, residing in a province where many of our residents place the wellbeing of others ahead of their own. Thousands make a positive difference every day. Homesteaders and aboriginal peoples, who were the ultimate survivors, chose to look upon challenges as opportunities for growth and helped to build this amazing place.
Our centennial is a time to reflect with pride upon the remarkable achievements of our citizens, past and present. With only three percent of Canada's population, Saskatchewan has given the world innovative ideas, talented artists and academics, and creative policy makers. We have also been the bread basket of the globe, and have had unparalleled volunteers. We were and are a generous and decent people.
Our 100th birthday is also a time to look forward. The founder of the scouting movement, Lord Baden-Powell said:
"So in our work – indeed, in any work of life – we should look around with joy and goodwill; look back with thankfulness at what we have accomplished and then press on with renewed vigour, with helpful initiative, and with broadened outlook, towards the highest goal."
My fellow Saskatchewanians, it is a precious gift for me to be your lieutenant governor. I, like you, am looking forward to an unforgettable centennial celebration. I extend an open invitation to all who have called Saskatchewan home, to return for our 100th birthday. In addition, I ask every one of you to launch this exciting and historic year at the centennial New Year's Day levee at Government House in Regina. It will be the party of the century.
