CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL THROUGH THEATRE, FILM AND HERITAGE PROJECTS

Released on December 6, 2004

A new commemorative theatre project, special television programming and enhanced funding for centennial heritage projects will provide additional opportunities for Saskatchewan to celebrate 100 years of heart in 2005.

Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 will provide $250,000 to the Saskatchewan Arts Board for the creation and management of a special drama production to mark the anniversary. The Saskatchewan Centennial Theatre Tour was tendered and awarded to Dancing Sky Theatre Group of Meacham. The custom-made theatre production will tour communities in 2005 and will celebrate Saskatchewan's diverse and vibrant cultures.

"Saskatchewan's centennial celebrations are about people and about our collective pride in our province," Centennial Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "This special production will showcase our centennial spirit and share our province's story with Saskatchewan residents and visitors."

Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) will broadcast centennial-related programming throughout the year on Saskatchewan's personalities, history and breakthroughs in science and technology. Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 has committed $160,000 to assist with this special programming.

Anticipation of the province's centennial anniversary prompted a higher number of applicants for grants administered by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation. Additional funding totaling $95,000 from Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 has been allocated to fund heritage projects in the centennial year including historical building restorations, conferences, publications and heritage awareness projects.

"Saskatchewan's rich heritage is vitally important in celebrating our province in 2005," Hagel said. "We have a province built on so much history, and we need to preserve and promote our first century as we move forward confidently into our second century."

Further details on these programs will be announced at a later date. Additional information on Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 is available online at www.sask2005.ca.
