SIGNING OF NORTH'S FIRST REGIONAL WASTE AUTHORITY

Released on April 28, 2004

It's now official. Saskatchewan's north has its first regional waste authority.

The provincial government provided $119,250 to the Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Authority to handle the consolidation of municipal solid waste management in the area. The money is being used for a variety of purposes including the purchase of collection and recycling equipment and landfill development.

The Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Authority represents the Town of La Ronge, the Village of Air Ronge, the Lac La Ronge First Nation and a number of small nearby communities represented by the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District (NSAD). It had been meeting on an ad hoc basis for about two years, but today signed an agreement to establish the Authority.

"Waste reduction and recycling are key to effective and efficient management of solid waste systems," Environment Minister David Forbes said. "These kinds of efforts contribute to the creation of a green and prosperous economy and we look forward to the development for other regional waste authorities in the north."

The Authority will serve communities within a 25-mile radius of the Town of La Ronge. These communities will close their landfills and, with the use of transfer stations, the waste will be hauled to the existing landfill site in the Town of La Ronge.

The $119,250 contributed to the Authority last year came from the province's Centenary Fund. This fund was established in 2000 to complete important projects in time for the upcoming celebration of Saskatchewan's 100th birthday next year.

"The Town of La Ronge is pleased to be part of the Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Authority," La Ronge Mayor and Authority Chair Joe Hordyski said. "The financial help received from Centenary Fund will greatly improve the capacity and efficiency of our waste management operation."
