SASKWATER SUPPORTS MINTENKO IN BID FOR OLYMPIC GOLD

Released on April 26, 2004

Minister Responsible for SaskWater Peter Prebble today officially announced support for Olympic swimmer Michael Mintenko who will be competing for Olympic gold in Athens this August. The announcement was made at Prince Arthur Community School in Moose Jaw and was attended by teachers, students and their parents.

"Michael is a great ambassador for Saskatchewan and for our nation," Prebble said. "His dedication to realize his dream is a model for every person to follow. SaskWater is proud to support Michael's effort to achieve excellence as an athlete. Young people can see that his success is evident not only by a winning record, but also by his growth as a person. Michael knows that any dream is attainable."

Len Mintenko, Michael's father, was on hand to receive the $5,000 in sponsorship on behalf of Michael. He says he is very happy to see the local support shown for Michael and notes Michael also wanted to leave a legacy for other young swimmers. "He started a scholarship fund with the proceeds from calendar sales, to help fund the training of young local swimmers."

SaskWater partners with Prince Arthur Community School for various activities and supports the swim program every year.
