In honour of Earth Day, the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse has announced the winners of its third annual poster contest that raises awareness of climate change.This year's winning posters were created by:
- Read Smith from Drake Elementary School;
- Megan Hrytzak from Kelvington High School;
- Amanda Clark from Dr. Isman Elementary School in Wolseley; and
- Robyn Fortier from H. Hardcastle School in Edam.
Held annually, the Energy & Our Environment Poster Contest encourages grade five and six students from across the province to create posters with an environmental theme to demonstrate the importance of incorporating responsible environmental choices into our daily activities.
"This poster contest is just one of the ways SaskPower educates the public about the impact of climate change on our environment," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "With over 500 submissions from 40 different schools, I am encouraged that so many of our province's young people are showing an interest in addressing this important global issue."
A winning poster was selected from each school, and the top four posters were selected from this smaller group. The top four winners will each receive a mountain bike and each of the top four winners' schools will receive a $250 credit for the purchase of trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds. The winning schools will also receive $250 worth of climate change materials for the school library.
Prizes will be presented at the schools of the four winners before the end of the school year.
