Eight Regional Waste Authorities are getting a helping hand from the provincial government.The eight Authorities are receiving a total of $485,000 through the province's Centenary Fund. The money will be used for a variety of purposes including landfill development, purchase and collection of recycling equipment and developing transfer stations.
"All efforts that are directed toward the more effective and efficient management of solid waste benefit the environment and the people of Saskatchewan," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "Working together, we can encourage waste reduction and recycling."
Funding has been approved for the Parkland Regional Waste Management Authority (Kamsack area), La Ronge and District Regional Waste Management Authority, Highway 55 Waste Management Corporation (Big River/Spiritwood area), West Yellowhead Waste Resource Authority (Wilkie/Maidstone area), Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Association, Central Regional Landfill Waste Management Authority (Wadena area), North Central Saskatchewan Waste Management Corporation (Prince Albert area) and the Red Coat Waste Resource Authority (Carlyle area).
The Centenary Fund was established by the provincial government in 2000 to help complete important capital projects in preparation for Saskatchewan's centennial celebrations in 2005. So far more than $2 million from the Fund has been distributed to eight Regional Waste Authorities across the province.
