Rail City Industries Inc. of Melville today received a $71,000 annual operating grant from the provincial government to enable five individuals with disabilities to live more independently.The new funding will provide the individuals with 80 hours per week of program staff support through a new semi-independent residential initiative. Rail City Industries has purchased a large home to rent to the five individuals, who were recently living in other residential care facilities or in their family homes. A recent assessment indicated a supported living residential option was most appropriate for them.
"Enabling individuals to live more independently is an important part of government's vision that all Saskatchewan people have opportunities to contribute to and be included in the economic and social life of the province," Community Resources and Employment Minister Glenn Hagel said during a visit to Melville. Hagel noted that the Saskatchewan government has allocated nearly $6 million in new funding this year to support citizenship and participation for persons with disabilities.
"We are so pleased to be able to assist these individuals in living more independently," Rail City Industries CEO Arlene McQuire said. "People in our community have been very supportive and generous by adopting rooms, contributing material and furnishings, and providing hands-on support for the renovations."
Rail City Industries Inc. operates a residential and vocational/employment program with two group homes, a supportive living program, and a developmental and activity centre program. It provides sheltered and supported employment to approximately 45 individuals with disabilities from the Melville area.
