Ten Community School students are recipients of this year's Prince of Wales Scholarships worth $500 each."The Prince of Wales Scholarships reflect the special interest of His Royal Highness in youth and education. These students are being recognized for their active participation and demonstrated leadership in both school and community. This is the second year for this scholarship program. The recipients should be very proud of their achievements," Learning Minister Judy Junor said.
The scholarship winners attend Community Schools in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina, Duck Lake, Leask, Beauval, and Meadow Lake.
Students who attend Community Schools can be nominated in Grade 11 for the Prince of Wales Scholarships. Nominations are prepared by Community School leadership teams. Nomination criteria include: school-based and community-based leadership initiative, responsibilities outside school, financial need and academic performance. Recipients receive their award in two payments of $250 each, in the fall and in the spring, during Grade 12.
Premier Lorne Calvert created these scholarships as the Province's continuing gift to commemorate the Prince of Wales' visit to Saskatchewan in 2001.
His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, has sent a message indicating how pleased he is that the scholarship program continues with a very high standard of entries and how important it is for young people to complete secondary school.
"There is nothing more important for young people as they set off on their path in life than the bedrock of a good education," the Prince said.
The deadline for Community Schools to submit their nominations for next year's scholarships is April 30th, 2004.
