Recycling is taking a big step forward in the Kamsack area.The Parkland Regional Waste Management Authority is getting ready to build a recycling centre in Kamsack.
"Recycling plants go a long way toward keeping our province clean for today and future generations by reducing the amount of material that ends up in our landfills," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "The construction of a new centre in Kamsack is a true example of regional municipal co-operation in the area."
Construction of the centre is expected to begin in November with operation of the plant expected early in 2004.
"We have started recycling paper fibre and plan to expand to include plastics and tin as soon as we can find markets for those products," Parkland Regional Waste Authority Chairman Grant See said. "Our new facility will cut our cost of operation and provide much needed local employment."
The Parkland Regional Waste Management Authority serves about 12,000 people and includes the Rural Municipalities of Cote, Key, St. Phillips, Good Lake, Buchanan, Hazel Dell, Invermay, Preeceville and Clayton as well as the towns, villages, organized hamlets and parks in those areas. It will also soon serve the nearby First Nations.
The Authority received $117,518 last year and is receiving $130,500 this year from the province's Centenary Fund. The four-year fund was established in 2000 to help pay for various capital projects in preparation for Saskatchewan's centennial celebrations in 2005.
