The provincial government is supporting strong, capable local governance through the new Municipal Leadership Development Program.
"Every community and municipality in this province is served by people who care about the future of their communities," Government Relations Minister Ron Osika said. "They are working to ensure their communities are good places for people to live, work and do business. This program is designed to provide community-based leadership training to build local capacity – a recommendation of the Action Committee on the Rural Economy."
The program is suitable for current and aspiring councillors, mayors, reeves and administrators.
"Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) supports working with our municipal partners to create opportunities for our members to increase their knowledge of the many aspects of conducting business on behalf of our cities, towns and villages," SUMA President Mike Badham said.
"Programs like this that are developed by the organizations themselves benefit all our municipal leaders because they provide the Saskatchewan perspective," Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Neal Hardy said. "Partnering with our municipal organizations and the province provides both the opportunity to share expertise and is more cost efficient."
The Municipal Leadership Development Program was designed in partnership with the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, The Saskatchewan Association of Northern Communities, the Urban Municipal Administrators Association of Saskatchewan, the Rural Municipal Administrators Association of Saskatchewan and Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs.
The initial five modules of the program will cover Roles and Responsibilities, an Introduction to Financial Planning, Strategic Planning and Land-use Planning for Municipalities, Municipal Economic Development Fundamentals, Human Resources in the Municipal Workplace and Public Relations and Communications for Municipalities. Additional topics can be added at the request of the partners to the Advisory committee. Contact your municipal organization or the program website at www.mldp.ca for more information.
