LEIFSON INQUEST

Released on September 19, 2003

An inquest into the death of Blaine Leifson will be held October 7th and 8th, 2003, at 9:30 am at the Queen's Bench Courthouse in Swift Current.

Mr. Leifson, aged 45, died in Swift Current Regional Hospital on October 27th, 2002. On October 16th, 2002, Mr. Leifson was sentenced in Provincial Court and was in police custody on October 17th, 2002, when he was transferred to Swift Current Regional Hospital. Mr. Leifson remained in hospital until his death.

Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, requires an inquest to be held into the death of any person who dies while an inmate in a jail, penitentiary, lock-up or correctional facility.

In addition to establishing when and where the death occurred and the medical cause of the death, the Coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future. Inquests are open to the public.

Coroner d'Arcy Morrice of Swift Current will preside at the inquest.
