Environment Minister Buckley Belanger today announced a signing of a five-year timber supply licence for the La Ronge-based Kitsaki-Zelensky partnership.
Kitsaki-Zelensky, a partnership of Zelensky Brothers Forest Products and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, was awarded the licence for just over 350,000 cubic metres of wood volume annually. The volume will be harvested from nearly 600,000 hectares in areas west, south and east of La Ronge. The company currently operates a sawmill in La Ronge.
"This agreement is a significant achievement and key milestone," Belanger said. "It fulfills a promise made in 1999, when we began a major expansion of our province's forest industry with full participation of northern and Aboriginal people."
The supply areas covered in the agreement were previously part of the Weyerhaeuser Forest Management Agreement (FMA), identified as surplus and made available for reallocation to northern community-based partnerships.
