New upgrades to Melville's main baseball diamonds will allow that city to build on its reputation as a première host of national-class baseball and sporting events in Canada.
Government Relations Minister Ron Osika presented a cheque for $50,000 today to Garnet Keller, Project Co-ordinator of Melville's Committee for the Canada Cup. Melville Mayor Michael Fisher hosted the presentation at Melville City Hall.
"Previous upgrades to the city's baseball diamonds helped put Melville and Saskatchewan in the national spotlight, as host of the Canada Cup midget baseball championships," Osika said. "Those events were tremendously successful, and additional improvements to the Melville ball diamonds will help attract even more national-class sporting events in future."
The new funding will be used to add washroom, change room and shower facilities at the Melville ball diamonds, as well as food service and preparation facilities.
"Hosting the Canada Cup baseball championships in 2001 and 2002 was a wonderful experience for our community," Mayor Fisher said. "Melville will continue to host this annual event through 2005, and the upgrades announced today will help ensure the future success of this event in our city."
"The Centenary Fund has helped our organization create one of the province's best sports facilities right here in Melville," added Keller. "These new upgrades will make it possible to build on our city's recent success as the host of nationally-televised baseball tournaments that attracted teams from every province in the country."
The $50,000 in provincial funding was drawn from the Centenary Fund. Previous funding of $256,000 from the Centenary Fund was used to improve the dugouts, irrigation, spectator seating, lighting and scoreboard at the Melville baseball diamonds.
The Centenary Fund will leave a legacy of Saskatchewan's Centennial for future generations. Leading up to the centennial celebrations in 2005, the government is funding projects that are of provincial or regional interest and develop municipal infrastructure.
