STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO WALK TO SCHOOL OCTOBER 8th

Released on October 3, 2003

Students, parents and teachers are invited to increase their physical activity on Wednesday, October 8th by supporting International Walk to School Day, part of International Walk to School Week, October 6th-10th.

Schools are encouraged to organize events that promote an active means of getting to and from school such as walking, biking or in-line skating each day of the specially designed week.

The promotion helps communities address the issue of increasing physical activity levels of children, youth and families.

"Physical activity has many benefits to individuals and communities," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford said. "Getting active will make us feel better, improve our well being and help us join in more activities with our friends, neighbours and families."

The Government of Saskatchewan supports a more physically active Saskatchewan. Culture, Youth and Recreation has developed a plan, together with community partners, to increase physical activity levels of Saskatchewan people by 10 percentage points by 2010.

Saskatchewan in Motion™, the four-year provincial health promotion program, launched in April 2003, is part of the overall plan to get Saskatchewan people on the move.

International Walk to School Day is a component of the National Active and Safe Routes to School Program. To register your school, or for more information and ideas about taking part in the International Walk to School Day, visit www.goforgreen.ca. There are special provincial and national prizes for the schools demonstrating the largest percentage of student participation.
