The newly formed and only Regional Waste Authority in the north is getting a helping hand from the province's Centenary Fund. The La Ronge and District Regional Waste Management Authority is receiving $119,250 to handle the consolidation of municipal solid waste management in the area.
"This is an important environmental step for northern Saskatchewan," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "The work of the Authority will mean the better management of municipal solid waste and improved recycling."
The La Ronge and District Regional Waste Management Authority represents members from the Town of La Ronge, the Village of Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. The Authority is using the funding to buy collection and recycling equipment and develop a transfer station to work in conjunction with the local recycling centre.
"I'm pleased to see this first northern Authority, and I hope this leads to the formation of other Regional Waste Authorities in the North," Belanger said.
The province achieved a 28.3 per cent reduction of waste going into landfills between 1988-2000. Efforts of Regional Waste Management Authorities are expected to build on those statistics.
The Centenary Fund was created in 2000 to provide money to help pay for various important projects in time for the province's centennial in 2005.
