NEW LABOUR RELATIONS BOARD CHAIR APPOINTED

Released on October 2, 2003

James Seibel has been appointed as Chairperson of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board for a five-year term effective immediately.

Seibel, a Vice-Chair and Executive Officer of the Board since 1997, succeeds Gwen Gray, who resigned earlier this year to return to private practice.

"Mr. Seibel's appointment has been positively received by key stakeholders in the labour and business communities," Labour Minister Deb Higgins said. "His experience in all facets of the labour relations field positions him well for his new role with the Board."

Seibel obtained his law degree from the University of Saskatchewan. He was in private practice in Saskatoon from 1981 to 1997. Prior to joining the Board he was a partner with Gauley and Company.

The Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board is a quasi-judicial tribunal that adjudicates disputes under The Trade Union Act and deals with applications for union certification or decertification. The board operates independently of government and is comprised of equal numbers of employee and employer representatives.
