More northerners will have better access to training thanks to a new video conferencing system to be installed at 12 sites in various northern communities.
Today six northern organizations joined with Northern Affairs, SaskTel and Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs to announce the installation of the new equipment.
The project was launched today with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding among the participants. These include the Saskatchewan Association of Northern Communities (New North), Northlands College, the Keewatin Career Development Corporation, the Northern Lights School Division No. 113, the Ile-a-la-Crosse School Division No. 112, the Creighton School Division No. 111, Northern Affairs, SaskTel and Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs. The partners committed a total of $87,000, staff resources and physical space for the initiative.
"This video conferencing network provides a more efficient way to provide training workshops with Northern municipal elected officials and staff, consult with people, and hold meetings," Government Relations Minister Ron Osika said. "We will also save travel time and money by hooking up through video conferences."
"This initiative lets our northern people take advantage of the video conferencing technology to connect with their peers without leaving home," Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger said. "This initiative is made possible by the co-operation of all the partners and may serve as a model for other similar partnerships in the future."
The initiative will be set up in stages with a few sites added in each stage. Stage one, this fall, will include six pilot video conferencing sites at La Ronge, Beauval, Creighton, Cumberland House, Buffalo Narrows and Ile a la Crosse. The first phase will concentrate on the installation of the video conferencing equipment and the teaching of local staff on how to effectively use the equipment to improve communications with one or several locations. SaskTel will provide installation and support and evaluate each phase of the initiative.
The initiative is developed and managed by a committee made up of representatives of the partners.
