QUARTERLY POLLING RESULTS RELEASED

Released on November 19, 2003

Results of polling for the second quarter of the year were released today showing agriculture continued to be the most important issue facing Saskatchewan (September 2003). Agriculture was rated as the most important issue by 35.5 per cent of respondents with the economy-population following closely at 35.1 per cent. Health care fell several points to 14.7 per cent compared to 20 per cent in June 2003.

In the September poll, over one half of respondents moderately or strongly approved of the way the provincial government is handling the economy. Over 66 per cent of respondents felt the number of people employed in the province was staying the same or increasing.

HealthLine is a toll-free, confidential telephone service you can call 24 hours a day and get health advice or information from a registered nurse. Polling indicates that HealthLine received a significant and favourable profile early in its development. HealthLine became operational August 1st, 2003 and was officially launched in September. Twenty-three percent of respondents to the September poll were aware of the service. Almost one half of respondents indicated they would be somewhat or very likely to use the service.

No omnibus polling was conducted in July or August. The results of two standalone polls were also released today.

Saskatchewan Environment commissioned a Fire Awareness Post-Campaign survey in July. The poll was conducted by Decision Research at a cost of $9,800.

Saskatchewan Health commissioned a standalone poll on a variety of health-related issues. The poll was conducted in July by Sigma Analytics at a cost of $15,392.

The total cost for 2nd quarter polling was $47,685.20.

Copies of the polling report can be picked up at Media Services, Room 34, Legislative Building or can be found at www.executive.gov.sk.ca/polling.htm
