Six lucky winners of the Grey Cup Gala Getaway and their guests will experience flat-out fun this weekend as they travel to Regina from across the country for Canada's national party.
The contest – part of the Our Future is Wide Open campaign to promote the province – was organized by Industry and Resources and a variety of private-sector partners. Special Grey Cup ticket packages were provided courtesy of the 2003 Grey Cup Organizing Committee.
Four fans won trips for two to the Grey Cup at Saskatchewan Roughrider away games in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Calgary, while another fan won a trip awarded through the Gala Getaway Web site, and the sixth fan won at a Rider home game in September.
"Hosting the Grey Cup is a tremendous opportunity to show the rest of the country all our province has to offer," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "Football fans may come for the game, but they are also going to see the tremendous quality of life and economic benefits our province provides."
The Gala Getaway campaign consisted of pre-game receptions for Saskatchewan expatriates and in-stadium advertising. Fans attending Rider away games in Ottawa and Toronto, as well as a September home game, received brochures promoting Saskatchewan sports, cultural and economic achievements.
More than 1,000 alumni from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Regina took part in Slice of Saskatchewan pre-game receptions where they heard about major national events taking place in the province such as the Grey Cup, the 2004 Nokia Brier, the 2005 Canada Summer Games, and the 2005 Centennial Celebrations. They also sampled Saskatchewan-made pizza and saskatoon pie supplied by Gala Getaway partners Tumblers Restaurant and Northgate Bakery in Regina.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to return to Saskatchewan and take part in the Grey Cup festivities. Regina has developed a reputation of leading by example when it comes to hosting Canada's biggest November party," Robert Stephenson, winner from Ottawa, said. "Who would've imagined that attending a CFL game in Ottawa last August would result in such fortune."
The winners are: Leon Crossfield, Pickering Ontario; Robert Stephenson, Ottawa; Tara Johnson, Calgary; Lynn Sisett, Maple Ridge, British Columbia; Karen Kivell, Regina; and Jacqueline Boggs, Burlington, Ontario. Winners received return airfare and accommodation for two, tickets to Grey Cup special events and the game itself, plus honorary Saskatchewan citizenship.
Private sector partners in the project included the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 2003 Grey Cup Organizing Committee, Tourism Saskatchewan, Cities of Regina and Saskatoon, Canada Summer Games 2005, Nokia Brier 2004 (Saskatoon), Casino Regina, Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan, Tumblers' Restaurant, Northgate Bakery (Regina), and Purolator Courier.
