The province is naming northern landmarks in honour of 74 Saskatchewan military personnel who gave their lives in the Second World War."We are showing our gratitude and paying tribute to the servicemen and women of Saskatchewan who lost their lives for their country while on overseas duty," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "This year, we have fulfilled our commitment to complete the Saskatchewan Geo-Memorial Project. In total, we have named 3,855 northern lakes, peninsulas, bays, rivers and islands after the Saskatchewan men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II."
The Saskatchewan Geo-Memorial Project began in 1947. Information Services Corporation (ISC) of Saskatchewan is responsible for the project that is administered through the Saskatchewan Geographic Names Board.
"On behalf of ISC, and the province, it has been an honour to complete this mandate and to work with the surviving relatives of the individuals who are receiving this commemoration," ISC President and CEO Mark MacLeod said. "This project has created a lasting legacy of our people's contribution to the history of our country."
Families of the deceased will receive a commemorative certificate, as well as research about the geographic feature that has been named in honour of their relative. This documentation is retained as part of the permanent place name files, accessible by any interested person or group.
