SASKATOON COMMUNITY GROUPS SET FOR SUMMER

Children's summer programs were given a boost today when the Province presented a total of $8,000 from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) to the Saskatchewan Cerebral Palsy Association and the Sturby Place Tenant Association.

"The summer programs offered by these two community organizations are valuable because they provide children and youth with the opportunity to engage in healthy, active living," Learning Minister and Saskatoon Eastview MLA Judy Junor said on behalf of Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford. "It is this type of programming that helps everyone enjoy Saskatchewan's quality of life within our vibrant communities."

Junor presented the Saskatchewan Cerebral Palsy Association with $4,000 for its Camp Critter program. Camp Critter is a wheelchair accessible day camp specifically designed for children ages four to six who have cerebral palsy or other neuro-motor disabilities. Some of the daily programming will include playtime, sharing circles, stories, snacks, personal hygiene and field trips.

"Camp Critter is 'Where kids come first'. The camp will assist children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities to have a fun summer while also giving their parents some much needed respite," Camp Critter Fundraising Co-ordinator Marlea Whitley said. "We are grateful to the Government of Saskatchewan for their generous support, without which we would not be able to offer this worthwhile program."

On May 19th, Junor also presented $4,000 to the Sturby Place Tenant Association to help with its upcoming Summer Programs. The Sturby Place Summer Programs will be offered to children under the age of eight from low income families. Retreats will be organized to provide the participants with the opportunity to experience Saskatchewan's landscapes. Other activities will include arts and crafts, trips to the libraries, and recreational fun including outdoor sports.

The CIF was established by the provincial government in 1997 to return a portion of casino profits to communities. Since its inception, the fund has provided more than 2,300 community groups with a total of almost $13.5 million.
