SASKATCHEWAN PROMOTES HEALTHY LIVING

Released on May 13, 2003

Saskatchewan has stepped forward to become one of Canada's healthiest, most physically active provinces by supporting the national SummerActive 2003 campaign.

"We are committed to promoting healthy active living with the help of the provincial organizations responsible for Saskatchewan sport, culture and recreation," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford said. "Together we will build a wide open future that is characterized by healthier people and more vibrant communities leading up to our 2005 Centennial."

The SummerActive campaign is designed to increase awareness about the importance of physical activity, healthy eating and tobacco-free lifestyles. The campaign will build on the Province's new in motion program which was recently launched as a province-wide Centennial initiative to help Saskatchewan people get more active.

The goals and objectives of the SummerActive campaign also support the province's report addressing the need for physical activity entitled A Physically Active Saskatchewan - A Strategy To Get Saskatchewan People In Motion.

SummerActive is a Federal-Provincial/Territorial initiative to increase public awareness of the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle. The campaign has been promoted to 827 schools across the province, who now have access to resource kits developed by Health Canada. These kits include all of the materials necessary to organize local events and programs.

The SummerActive 2003 campaign runs until June 21st.
