CALVERT AND BELLEGARDE MARK MILESTONE

The province and the FSIN formalized what is already an excellent working relationship today by signing a Bilateral Protocol. The Protocol represents a framework for effective communications and establishes a process for the parties to address issues of mutual concern.

Premier Lorne Calvert and Chief Perry Bellegarde of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations participated in a ceremony at the legislature today to formally recognize the relationship between the two governments.

"The Protocol is an expression of my government's commitment to continue the excellent work in co-operation with the First Nations' leadership toward substantive, positive change for all Saskatchewan people," Calvert said. "Given current demographics, our province is faced with a pressing need to address First Nations' issues with practical, sustainable plans for a prosperous future. The Bilateral Protocol is an important vehicle to take us to that future."

"We look forward to the implementation of this important formal arrangement that will provide our leadership with regular access to the Premier and Cabinet Members to discuss matters central to the development and advancement of our First Nations citizens and communities in this region," Chief Bellegarde said. "We are pleased that the Provincial Leadership is taking this step to work in co-operation with our First Nations on issues that concern us and on efforts that will take us collectively into a winning future. Considering the projected demographics in the province, when First Nations win, everyone wins."

The Protocol will facilitate formal discussions between the government and FSIN on pressing issues including health, treaty land entitlement, matters surrounding lands and resources, economic development opportunities, urban issues as well as issues of mutual concern involving the federal government.
