Today students at École Alex Wright Community School are celebrating news that they will have a brand new school in the 2004-05 school year. Saskatchewan Learning is contributing about $3 million to this $4.4 million project, sharing the cost with the Nipawin School Division.
"We are investing in schools, in students, and in the future of Saskatchewan," Speaker of the Legislature Myron Kowalsky said, on behalf of Learning Minister Judy Junor. "The existing École Alex Wright Community School has served students very well for close to 50 years. However, the time has come to provide students with a new, modern education facility."
According to a feasibility study building a new school rather than renovating the existing facility is the more cost-effective option to upgrade programming and accommodate changing needs at the school. The new school will be about 50 per cent larger than the existing one and will include additional space for pre-kindergarten and grade three students. Alex Wright is currently a K-2 school.
"We're delighted École Alex Wright Community School is growing to include Pre-kindergarten and grade three," Nipawin School Division Board Chair Maryanna Burton said. "This is an exciting day for everyone connected to the school."
With the $40 million in the Saskatchewan Learning K-12 capital budget, approximately 140 school construction, renovation or upgrading projects have been funded in communities around the province this fiscal year. An additional $20 million over four years for K-12 school facilities is available from the Centenary Fund, which was announced in 2000.
"This project is part of the government's commitment to invest in modern, well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students," Kowalsky added.
