Flasks recalled

Released on March 3, 2003

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) is issuing a public recall of a metal flask used in a gift package containing a 375 ml bottle of Appleton Estate Rum and a leather wrapped flask. This product was sold in Saskatchewan liquor stores and franchises for two years -- during the 2000 holiday and 2001 holiday seasons.

The affected flasks had either burgundy-colour or tan-colour leather coverings. Similar flasks without the leather covering are not included in the recall.

The national recall was issued by the Canadian Association of Liquor Jurisdiction's Quality Assurance Committee upon the advice of the Quebec Liquor Control Board.

There is no problem with the Appleton Rum product; however, tests conducted in another province have shown that there may be a problem with lead leaching from the flask once the rum or any other beverage has been added to the flask. Tests have shown the lead content to be higher than allowable limits permitted.

At this time, there have been no reported illnesses associated with this product.

This recall pertains to the leather wrapped flasks only, and does not apply to Appleton Rum itself.

Anyone with this leather-wrapped flask can return it to any SLGA liquor store or franchise for a full refund.
