Construction on a major addition, renovation and upgrade will begin this fall at Wynyard Comprehensive High School and should be completed in time for the 2004-05 school year. The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing $1.5 million to this $2.5 million project, sharing the cost with the Shamrock School Division.
"We are investing in schools, in students, and in the future of Saskatchewan," Learning Minister Judy Junor said. "The Wynyard Comprehensive High School has served students very well for many years. However, the time has come to provide a more modern, upgraded education facility."
The project includes ventilation upgrades, the addition of two relocatable classrooms, four permanent rooms to accommodate the band, computer and science programs, as well as additional renovations, upgrades and aesthetic improvements. Except for the area that houses the regional college, the two-storey east wing will be demolished.
"We're excited about the upcoming additions and renovations at our school," Shamrock School Division Board Chair Terry Raycroft said. "When this project is complete, it will help to significantly improve the educational environment for students in our community."
With the $36 million in the Saskatchewan Learning K-12 capital budget, which includes $4.6 million from the Centenary Fund, approximately 140 K-12 school construction, renovation or upgrading projects will be funded in communities around the province this year.
"This project is part of the government's commitment to invest in modern, well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students, ensuring our future is wide open," Junor said.
