NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR SASKATCHEWAN PROTECTIVE SERVICES MEDAL

Released on June 13, 2003

Individuals who work in the protective services sector can now submit their nominations for the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal.

"The Protective Services Medal is a welcome addition to Saskatchewan's honours and awards program," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "It is with great pride that the Province now has a medal to acknowledge these most worthy individuals for their many years of selfless service to the people of Saskatchewan."

"This medal demonstrates the Province's deep-felt appreciation for the dedication of those individuals who have made a long-time commitment to safeguard the wellbeing of others," Provincial Secretary Joanne Crofford said.

The medal, established by the provincial legislature in May 2003, recognizes individuals who have 25 cumulative years of exemplary service protecting the people of Saskatchewan or their property.

Recipients of the Protective Services Medal will include people who work in agencies such as: Fire Protection Services; Police Services; Canada Customs and Revenue Agency; Citizenship and Immigration Canada; Emergency Medical Services; Canadian Forces; Park Wardens; Highways and Transportation Transport Compliance Branch; and Federal and Provincial Corrections. A complete list of eligible agencies is available from the Office of Protocol and Honours, Saskatchewan Provincial Secretary.

Individuals who believe they are eligible can submit the appropriate documentation, including proof of eligible years of service, to the head of their current organization. Nominations will be assessed and forwarded to the Office of Protocol and Honours, Saskatchewan Provincial Secretary.

The Lieutenant Governor will present recipients with a medal, lapel pin and certificate during ceremonies across the province starting in the fall of 2003.
