The Saskatchewan Provincial Advisory Committee of Older Persons today identified steps for improving the well-being of the 148,000 seniors in Saskatchewan.Seniors Minister John Nilson and Committee Chairman Dr. Don King today released a document that makes 31 recommendations focusing on six goals: housing; transportation; health care; active living and lifelong learning; recognition; and safety and security.
The Provincial Policy Framework and Action Plan for Older Persons was developed by the Saskatchewan Provincial Advisory Committee of Older Persons, a committee appointed to advise the Minister Responsible for Seniors. The 13-member committee is comprised of individuals familiar with the concerns of seniors.
"Our province is fortunate to have such an active and involved seniors population. It is very important for government to know what issues affect older persons," Nilson said. "We will work with seniors groups to determine which recommendations are priorities and how we can work together to improve seniors' quality of life."
"Our committee envisions Saskatchewan as a province where the health, dignity and well-being of all older persons will be protected and promoted," King said. "We see the framework as an ongoing, evolving document that can encompass any new issues and challenges encountered by our province's older citizens."
Government has already adopted several recommendations, including increased funding for health services; increased Drug Plan spending and expanded coverage to include diabetic supplies and specialized nutritional products; and more affordable housing projects for seniors.
One of every seven people in Saskatchewan (14.5 per cent of the population) is over age 65.
