SEND A MESSAGE TO BUSH

Released on July 29, 2003

Premier Lorne Calvert is urging Saskatchewan people to send a message to the American people and US President George W. Bush, asking for the border to be re-opened to Canadian beef.

The premier launched a petition campaign today as he prepared to travel to Toronto to promote Canadian beef as part of a benefit concert by the Rolling Stones.

"With this petition, Saskatchewan people can make their voice heard in support of the beef industry," Calvert said. "We are asking that the United States re-open the border to Canadian beef. Canadian beef is safe. We are saying do not destroy the Canadian cattle industry and the livelihoods of so many people."

Calvert said the petition will be available at government offices and R.M. offices throughout the province. People can also download a copy from the Government of Saskatchewan website at www.gov.sk.ca.

Beginning July 30th, the petition will appear in Saskatchewan daily and weekly newspapers for people to cut out, sign and send to Premier Lorne Calvert. The petitions will then be forwarded to President Bush.

"It is imperative for the President to know how important it is that the decision to open the border be based on science. And the science says it is safe to open the border."

The petition will also be available at the Regina Agridome for those attending the live simulcast of the Rolling Stones concert.
