PROVINCE SUPPORTS YOUTH EMPOWERMENT CENTRE IN MELFORT

Released on July 25, 2003

The provincial government is providing $7,730 in prevention and support grant funding to the Youth Empowerment Centre in Melfort, which was opened in 2002.

The Melfort Metis Local and Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Eastern Region II (ERII), in partnership with Melfort District Interagency support, provide a safe and inviting environment through the Centre for children and youth ages 10-17. The Centre acts as a youth drop-in facility for more than 30 children and youth in Melfort.

Interagency partnership support is derived from the Melfort School Division, the City of Melfort Planning and Recreation Office, Kelsey Trail Health Authority, Corrections and Public Safety, RCMP, North East Regional Intersectoral Committee, and Community Resources and Employment.

"Youth issues and youth crime have been a concern in Melfort," Executive Director of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Eastern Region II Ryan Calder said. "The Centre provides a positive location for youth, especially aboriginal youth, to socialize and to learn more about healthy lifestyles, art, music, culture, and recreational prospects."

Community Resources and Employment Minister Glenn Hagel praised the Centre for the important work it does in helping the youth who utilize the facility to become better people and to see that the future is wide open for them.
