People in Elrose are now enjoying a new rose garden thanks to a contribution from the province's Centenary Fund.The province contributed $7,200 toward the cost of the more than $30,000 project. The Lil Mills Memorial Garden project included planting rose bushes, trees, shrubs, and other perennial and annual plants. Visitors can relax under the iron gazebo or in the open area sunroom, view the garden from the brick walkways, and enjoy the water fountain. The automatic watering system ensures efficient irrigation.
"This garden is testimony to the creative ways that Saskatchewan people are partnering with government to build on the excellent quality of life in Saskatchewan," Government Relations Minister Ron Osika said. "The people in Elrose and area can take pride in and enjoy this beautiful garden for many years to come."
"The Town of Elrose is proud to officially open the Lil Mills Memorial Garden in Elrose," Deputy Mayor Kim Torrance said. "We were able to carry out this project by partnering with the provincial government through its Centenary Fund."
The garden was named after long-time Mayor Jim Mills' late wife, Lil, who died of cancer in 2000.
The Centenary Fund was set up to leave a legacy of Saskatchewan's Centennial for future generations. Leading up to the centennial celebrations in 2005, the government is funding projects that are of provincial or regional interest and develop municipal infrastructure.
