PREMIER GOES TO TORONTO TO SUPPORT BEEF INDUSTRY

Released on July 16, 2003

Premier Lorne Calvert will participate in a special event in support of Canada's beef industry, being held in conjunction with the July 30th Rolling Stones concert in Toronto.

"The concert began as a way to restore Canada's image to the world after its battle with SARS," Premier Calvert said. "It has now expanded to include a barbeque in support of Canada's beef industry, which is still battling the devastating effects of border closures resulting from a single case of BSE."

In conjunction with the music concert, organizers are planning a half-mile barbeque showcasing Canadian beef. Up to 50 culinary teams from Canada and the United States will each prepare their specialties for concert-goers. Cooking judges will choose the best beef dishes in a number of categories.

The Province of Saskatchewan will donate Saskatchewan beef to be featured at the event. Premier Calvert will be on hand to help cook, and to encourage everyone attending the event to continue to purchase and eat Canadian beef.

Concert organizers expect a crowd of 500,000 people from Canada and the U.S. to attend the event, making it one of the largest ticketed music events ever.

"I am looking forward to serving up quality, 100 per cent Canadian beef to the thousands of Canadians and Americans there, and to deliver the message that our beef is among the best and safest in the world," Calvert said.

"This is just one way that we can show our support of the Canadian and Saskatchewan beef industries. Opening the border and restoring the flow of Canadian cattle and beef products to our trading partners remains a top priority."
