Saskatchewan's public infrastructure fares very well in comparison to other jurisdictions, according to a report issued today.The province released a report examining the state of public infrastructure, such as transportation and water, and assessing its impact on the business environment.
"Having a competitive business environment demands that a number of components be in place," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "This report will help Saskatchewan remain one of the most competitive places in which to do business by highlighting the province's strengths and identifying the areas which need enhancement. Investing in infrastructure today and planning for tomorrow is key to our future."
Derek Murray Consulting Associates Ltd. was commissioned to do a report that would provide a comprehensive review of the competitiveness of our province's infrastructure to support the Our Future is Wide Open investment attraction campaign.
The report identifies a number of Saskatchewan's advantages. For example, it points to the province's natural gas and telecommunications infrastructure as examples of strengths, which serve to make Saskatchewan's business climate attractive to investment and growth. The report lists Saskatchewan's energy rates as among the lowest in North America and notes that the province's road network is world-class.
The report also identifies areas of challenge that the province must address. For example, the province has built one of the best communications systems in North America and the challenge is to ensure that its caliber is maintained. Other challenges are to work toward greater access to air service, address the changing nature of the workforce, and capitalize on cutting-edge technology to remain competitive.
Cline said the report confirms Saskatchewan's competitiveness and that the province plans to use the findings as a roadmap for future planning. He has asked departments and Crown Corporations to provide an update on actions being undertaken or planned to address the challenges the report has identified.
"This document is a springboard for action to ensure that our future remains wide open and that we remain the best place in the world to live, work and do business," Cline said.
