FREE FISHING WEEKEND

Not many things in life are free, but this weekend July 12th and 13th, is Saskatchewan's annual Free Fishing Weekend. That means anyone, including people from outside the province, can fish in Saskatchewan without having to buy a licence.

"Saskatchewan's sport fishery is world class," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "This weekend is a good time to try your luck fishing in one of our wonderful lakes and rivers and to introduce new anglers to one of the province's most popular outdoor activities. It's also a time for us to recognize the importance of our fish and aquatic resources."

Last year more than 250,000 people spent time fishing in Saskatchewan, including more than 35,000 out of province anglers.

Although you do not need a license to take advantage of the Free Fishing Weekend, all other fishing regulations, including possession limits and reduced limits on some lakes and rivers remain in effect. A licence is required if you plan to take fish out of the province. Anyone fishing on Lac La Ronge must have a free endorsement, available from the local Saskatchewan Environment office. This endorsement helps monitor the number of anglers using the lake. More information about angling in Saskatchewan can be found in the free Saskatchewan Anglers' Guide, available wherever fishing licences are sold. Anglers are also reminded that the Free Fishing Weekend does not apply in national parks.

Free Fishing Weekend coincides with Saskatchewan's Parks Week (July 13th-19th) giving people another excellent reason to visit one of our many provincial parks.
