WILDFIRE ARSONIST FROM BIG RIVER CONVICTED

Released on January 31, 2003

A Big River resident was recently convicted of two counts of arson under the Criminal Code for two wildfires intentionally lit during the 2000 wildfire season.

In addition to being held in remand for four months before appearing in court, the offender was sentenced to two concurrent one-year jail terms at provincial court in Melfort.

Conservation officers began investigating the cause of two fires in the Fort-a-la-Corne Provincial Forest on May 7th, 2000. Provincial fire crews contained the Fort House Fire at three hectares in size, but the Beaver Fire grew to over 2,000 hectares. It is believed that both fires resulted from six incendiary devices set in the forest northeast of Gronlid.

Information supplied by the public several months after May 22nd when the Beaver Fire was finally extinguished was instrumental in convictions. The cost of suppressing the Beaver Fire was more than $770,000.

To report a suspected wildlife, fisheries, forestry or environmental crime, the public is encouraged to make use of the province's toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561.
