IMPROVING HIGHWAY 44 WEST OF ELROSE

Released on February 25, 2003

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing and shoulder widening 6.4 km of Highway 44 west of Elrose.

"Roadwork on this project is expected to begin in late April, and will be completed by the middle of June," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Seventy-one full-time workers will be employed on this nearly $1.3 million project."

Resurfacing and shoulder widening will take place on Highway 44 for 6.4 km from its Junction with Highway 4. Warner Construction Co. Ltd. of Regina was awarded the contract.

"Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is committed to building better highways in Saskatchewan," said Wartman. "Highway 44 has seen an increase in truck traffic, leading to wear and tear on these sections. The project scheduled for the Elrose area will help improve Highway 44, enhancing safety and the efficient transport of goods."

The government has committed $293 million to building better highways in 2002-2003. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved this year.
