Provincial funding of $4 million takes the Saskatchewan Forest Centre's (SFC) new building into the next stage of development.
Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline gave a progress report on the state-of-the-art facility as part of the ribbon cutting today at the centre's open house in Prince Albert. Salvage of existing buildings on the site is underway. Demolition will begin in March and construction of the permanent SFC building is scheduled for the spring. Tenants will move in autumn 2004.
"Prince Albert's reputation as a hub for forestry activity and employment is getting a boost," Cline said. "Not only will the new Saskatchewan Forest Centre be the cornerstone of forestry and wood product innovations and technology transfer, it will help revitalize Prince Albert's downtown and create new jobs."
Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation (SOCO) will undertake construction of the $12.7 million facility including demolishing existing buildings on the site and covering the capital cost of construction. Design details are being finalized, but the 75,000 sq. ft. building will showcase Saskatchewan's wood products and new technologies and initially house approximately 90 people.
The centre is charged with acquiring, creating and disseminating forest-related knowledge and ensuring that the industry has access to the best market research, new technologies and growth opportunities from across Canada and around the world. It is a non-profit company governed by a 13-member Board of Directors, nine of whom are from the private sector and four from government.
The forest industry is Saskatchewan's second-largest manufacturing industry, contributing more than $750 million annually to the provincial economy. Estimates from June 2002 indicate that major industry expansion would generate $900 million in new investment.
There are approximately 300 forestry related private enterprises in Saskatchewan. Since 1999, more than 8,000 new direct and indirect jobs have been created in the forest sector. The province is on track to meet and exceed its target of creating an additional 10,000 jobs through increased sustainable use of forests.
