Social Services Minister Glenn Hagel and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag opened eight, one-bedroom housing units in Meadow Lake to address a growing need for affordable housing. The ministers also announced the official opening of a new, enclosed amenity space, called the 'Hub', linking separate wings of senior's apartments located in the same complex.
"In their new location, the relocated housing units will provide affordable, independent living for their occupants," Hagel said.
Cost of the project totalled $297,800. The Town of Meadow Lake contributed land for the development and will share the cost of operation with the province.
The addition of the 'Hub' to the senior's apartments provides a physical link for the apartments and a common area for recreation and socializing. The new space includes a kitchen, dining area, assisted bathroom and storage for five scooters.
"The additional services help seniors to retain their independence and to remain living in their homes," Sonntag said.
The Meadow Lake Housing Authority manages 221 social housing units, consisting of 112 senior units, 94 family units and eight single adult units within the community. The authority manages an additional seven social housing units in the village of Dorintosh.
