HOUSING RENOVATIONS BENEFIT SWIFT CURRENT SENIORS

Released on February 17, 2003

Improvements to the Heritage Tower seniors' complex in Swift Current will help improve its resident's quality of life.

Renovation costs of $220,000 were funded by Saskatchewan Social Services, with a five percent contribution from the city of Swift Current.

"Our seniors helped build our province and we want to ensure they have adequate, affordable housing in their retirement," Social Services Minister Glenn Hagel said at the official ribbon cutting.

"The expansion and renovation of Heritage Tower enriches the lives of its 97 residents by increasing the opportunity for social interaction and recreation, Hagel said. " I am particularly pleased to note that it was the residents themselves who were the driving force behind these improvements."

"We are pleased to partner with the province in making the improvements at Heritage Tower, Swift Current Mayor Paul Elder said. "I want to thank the Swift Current Housing Authority for initiating this project and seeing it through to completion."

Heritage Tower, which was built in 1976, is made up of 104 one-bedroom units and one two-bedroom unit and is managed on behalf of the province by the Swift Current Housing Authority.
