A successful and innovative Saskatchewan-based company opened a new high-tech lab facility today in Saskatoon.
Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman joined Pavement Scientific International (PSI) President and CEO Dr. Curtis Berthelot this afternoon to celebrate the grand opening.
"PSI is another Saskatchewan success story that will have a positive impact on the business world," Wartman said. "This company sells engineering technology in a competitive national and international marketplace, but prefers to be a centre of excellence from its Saskatchewan base."
PSI was founded by Dr. Berthelot in 1998 and develops cost-effective options to rebuild and strengthen roads and highways. The expansion to a large lab facility was needed to hire additional technical staff, purchase testing equipment and act as headquarters to continue growing globally.
This innovative road construction procedure involves mixing existing subgrade soils with special blended materials. During the process, PSI material is blended with the existing surface, granular material, and subgrade material. This blended layer is then watered and compacted. Different thicknesses of gravel are placed over the strengthened subgrade with a sealed dust free surface.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation was one of the first of PSI's growing list of clients. In April of 2002, the department and PSI signed a five-year Road Strengthening Research and Development Agreement that will result in a minimum of 350 km of Saskatchewan highways constructed using PSI technology by 2007. PSI receives payment from the department on a per project basis for the technology and engineering services.
"Saskatchewan is a great place to develop a business as I experienced much support and interest in PSI's technology, especially from Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation," Berthelot said. "We've tested our technology with the department using pilot projects on Saskatchewan highways and have seen positive results. We are now selling the technology outside of Saskatchewan from our Saskatoon base."
