The many ways in which Saskatchewan people mark this holiday season are as diverse as the cultural backgrounds that make our province so rich and vibrant. In the Hermanson household, we join Christians around the world to celebrate Christmas and the birth of the Christ-child, God's son, who was born to bring peace and hope to our world.
Our family observes the longstanding traditions of sharing gifts on Christmas Eve, singing carols together, encouraging the children to recite parts they've memorized from school programs and Sunday School concerts and sharing many wonderful meals and good times with family and friends.
No matter how you celebrate this season of giving or mark the New Year, it is important that we all take time to remember the millions of people around the world who are forced to cope with the horrors of hunger, war and disaster.
We can all help in some way.
We can send a Christmas shoebox to an impoverished child in a third-world country. We can send an encouraging message to a Canadian peacekeeper serving in war-torn Afghanistan or we can support organizations helping earthquake victims rebuild their lives.
It is also a time to count our blessings and as Saskatchewan residents, we share many – personal freedoms, economic opportunity and a home province of tremendous natural beauty and a wealth of resources.
The past year was an exciting one for me as Leader of the Opposition.
Highlights for me included everything from boating on beautiful Pinehouse Lake in the North to riding on an unbelievably huge coal shovel near Estevan in the South.
I have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful Saskatchewan people while visiting virtually every corner of this great province.
On behalf of my wife Gail, our family, and the Official Opposition Saskatchewan Party, I wish you and your family happy holidays and peace and prosperity in the New Year.
