COTTAGE SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PROPOSED

Released on December 16, 2003

Saskatchewan Environment is establishing a new Cottage Subdivision Development Program to examine the potential for expansion and development of cottage lot subdivisions within provincial park land and on Crown resource land.

Three lakes at Meadow Lake Provincial Park were recommended for Phase I of the program based on a selection process that analyzed the supply and demand potential, developmental potential, site inspection on the lakes, and impacts to existing resource allocations and resource users. The lakes being studied for possible development are Lac Des Isles, Pierce Lake (Howe Bay) and Cold Lake (French Bay).

"Cottage subdivision development can have a significant impact on a local economy and has the potential to attract investment dollars from outside Saskatchewan," Environment Minister David Forbes said. "The potential number of cottage lots is not yet determined for Phase I, however, if only 200 cabins were built, that would translate into about $12 million in economic activity within the province."

Consultation with the local park advisory board and area First Nations has been initiated. Public meetings will be held in the communities of Meadow Lake, Dorintosh, Goodsoil and Pierceland in the new year.

Additional opportunities for cottage subdivision lots in other areas will be explored during the next phase of the program. Although specific lakes have not yet been identified, opportunities may be available at Greenwater Lake, Makwa Lake and Duck Mountain provincial parks and Weyakwin Lake Recreation Site.

Saskatchewan Environment currently administers 2,151 cottage leases on provincial park lands and 1,146 recreational leases for cottages on Crown lands. There are also several thousand private cottages in resort communities and remote locations throughout the province.
