AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT FUND AWARDS $1.6 MILLION FOR RESEARCH

Released on December 15, 2003

The Government of Saskatchewan will fund 20 new agriculture and food research projects through the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF).

Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's total contribution to this research is $1.56 million.

"These projects reflect Saskatchewan's commitment to value-added activity and diversification in our agriculture and food sector, as well as our determination to ensure that Saskatchewan producers have access to the latest in scientific knowledge and technology," Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Minister Clay Serby said.

Projects include research such as weed control in organic crop production; the development of bio-based insulated construction systems from parts of hemp and flax plants; and the development of new approaches to overcoming inadequate supplies of copper in the diet of cattle.

Funding has been awarded to the University of Saskatchewan; Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Stations at Swift Current and Saskatoon; the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute, Humboldt; Dalland Value Added Pork Inc., Kipling; Biolin Research Inc., Saskatoon; and the Prairie Oat Growers' Association, Saltcoats.

"By supporting research and development initiatives today, we will reap dividends tomorrow, in terms of new opportunities, jobs and wealth for Saskatchewan people," Serby said.

Proposed projects are reviewed and selected by the ADF Advisory Board. The deadlines for ADF project applications are May 15th and Nov. 15th each year.

For details about ADF applications, contact the Agriculture Research Branch in Regina at 787-6566.
