The City of Yorkton's strategy to revitalize its downtown has received a boost with the opening of a new liquor store.Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Eric Cline, Deputy Premier and MLA for Yorkton Clay Serby, and representatives from the City of Yorkton cut the ribbon today to officially open the store located at 36 Broadway Street E.
"This new store improves service for our customers," Cline said. "It offers a modern, more spacious shopping environment with improved selection. As well, the more convenient location means the store will help support the revitalization of downtown Yorkton."
The location of the new $1.3 million store was agreed upon following discussions between SLGA and the City of Yorkton. SLGA wanted to ensure the location complemented the City's plans to revitalize the downtown core.
"This new store represents an important partnership between government and the City of Yorkton," Serby said. "Government wanted to be certain that its capital investment would be good for business and also meet the development goals of the community."
Yorkton Mayor Phil DeVos said the new store will help attract future downtown development.
"The development of this store is a positive business initiative for the people of Yorkton," DeVos said. "It will be a major attraction for developers and other potential business tenants considering downtown development."
The new store has replaced the former SLGA store located at 44 Dracup Avenue N. with 7,700 square feet of expanded modern retail space, 500 additional products, improved access and more parking for customers. The Dracup Avenue store is now closed and all staff have moved to the new location, which will maintain the same hours of operation: 9:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday and 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., Sunday.
