Five northern housing authorities will benefit as a result of the graduation today of six residents of northern Saskatchewan from the Social Housing Management Training Program. The housing authorities are agencies of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation."Training northern people as property managers means their knowledge and expertise can be used to help northern housing agencies more effectively meet the housing needs of local people," Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford said. "Meeting our goals of economic independence and self-reliance begins with a foundation of marketable skills."
Three of the six graduates are expected to fill existing positions as Tenant Relations Officers in Buffalo Narrows, Beauval, and Cumberland House effective January 2004. Two new positions are being created in Creighton and Ile a la Crosse, enabling housing authorities in those communities to more effectively meet the needs of tenants. The sixth graduate will manage housing on his home First Nation.
"The importance of social housing in Northern Saskatchewan cannot be underestimated", Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger said. "By having trained and knowledgeable property managers, we can help ensure that tenants enjoy safe, quality housing."
The graduates are Tara Laliberte, Nathan Favel, Neil Natomagan, Tanya Flett, Carrie LeClaire-Nivon and Paul Tuccaro, Jr.
Graduates receive an Applied Certificate in Social Housing Management from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology, a Certificate in Applied Social Housing from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and a Certificate in Successful Site Management from the Real Estate Institute of Canada. The two-year program of classroom and applied study is an initiative of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Seven northern residents graduated from the program in December 2001.
The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, an agency of the Department of Community Resources and Employment, helps to build and maintain independence and promote self-sufficiency through the provision of housing and housing services for families, seniors and others who could not otherwise afford safe, secure shelter. Housing authorities and other housing partners provide a network responsible for the day-to-day management of housing units and the co-ordination of services to tenants.
