PREMIER WELCOMES COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION OPPORTUNITY

Released on December 2, 2003

Premier Lorne Calvert wants Premiers to demonstrate a strong and shared commitment to improving intergovernmental relations at this week's meeting in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The main purpose of the meeting is to launch the Council of the Federation, a new institution that premiers agreed to establish when they met in Charlottetown in July 2003.

"Premiers have a historic opportunity," Calvert said. "As we look across the country we see new premiers, premiers with new mandates and a new prime minister on his way into office. This is an exciting time that presents a real opportunity for change. Premiers ought to seize this opportunity to create better and more constructive intergovernmental relationships so we can better serve the needs of Saskatchewan people and all Canadians."

The premier said he expects to have a wide ranging discussion with premiers about the specific priorities for the new Council. That discussion will include the priorities premiers will pursue with the new prime minister as a follow up to their meeting with Paul Martin in Regina on November 16th.
