MORE SUPPORT FOR THE BEEF INDUSTRY

Released on August 28, 2003

Casino Regina is supporting the Saskatchewan cattle industry by hosting "I Love Canadian Beef" on Thursday, August 28th.

"Saskatchewan residents support our beef industry," Minister Joanne Crofford said, on behalf of the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, which operates Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw. "This event provides an opportunity for local residents in Regina to show their support."

Canada's beef industry has been devastated since a single cow in Alberta tested positive for mad cow disease on May 20, halting most foreign exports. A recent US and Mexican decision to accept certain Canadian beef products has been a good first step. However, there is still a lot of work to do to revive the beef industry.

"We are working with our partners to make a difference," Crofford said. "XL Meats and Centennial Meats have donated over 2000 portions of beef and Coca-Cola is donating the drinks. They have shown incredible support for this industry."

Beef on a bun and a Coke will be available for $3 between 11:00 and 2:00 in the Casino Regina Show Lounge. All proceeds will go to the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association for their Beef Action Fund.

"We would like to express our gratitude to Casino Regina, XL Meats, Centennial Foods and Coca-Cola for their generous support of the beef industry," said Marilyn Jahnke, President of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association. "Our beef has been scientifically proven safe and ready for export. We will continue to work hard to have the borders fully opened for live Canadian beef ."

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association is a non-profit organization established in 1913 that represents the cattle industry and safeguards the interests of producers.
