DRUG PLAN TO SUBSIDIZE NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS

Released on August 28, 2003

There is now financial help for people with complex medical conditions who rely on specialized nutritional products as their primary source of nourishment.

Effective Sept. 1, 2003, Saskatchewan Health's Drug Plan will assist with the incremental cost associated with using nutritional products in place of a regular diet. These costs will be shared between patients and Saskatchewan Health, using a co-payment based on family income and drug costs.

It is estimated that 120 people (mostly children) will benefit from this program. Patients will be referred through a professional dietician.

Coverage is available for people experiencing malabsorption, maldigestion, swallowing difficulties, and who are receiving at least 90 per cent of their nutrition through an eligible product (product list attached). In addition, the person must require a nutritional product for at least four consecutive months, and not be receiving assistance through other programs.

The annual cost of the program is $200,000, with the money being provided through the First Minister's Health Accord.

"A top priority of our Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care is improving the quality of health services and access to care, while ensuring our health system is sustainable into the future," Health Minister John Nilson said. "I am pleased Saskatchewan Health will be able to assist families with the cost of these important products."

"In situations where there are complex medical problems, high costs and the need for specialized nutritional products, families have sometimes had to use a product that is poorly tolerated and does not meet their needs," said Vivian Hooper a clinical dietician with the Regina Qu'Appelle Regional Health Authority. "This program will make a difference in the lives of our clients."

For information on the program please call toll free 1-866-727-7817, in Regina 787-7121.

Currently, the drug plan covers about 3,500 products and subsidizes the cost of prescription drugs for approximately 106,000 families.
