$10.2 MILLION EXPANSION OF CYPRESS WIND POWER FACILITY

Released on August 27, 2003

Seven more wind turbines will soon be supplying zero emission electricity to Saskatchewan GreenPower customers, thanks to a $10.2 million expansion of SaskPower's Cypress Wind Power Facility.

"Expanding the Cypress Wind Power Facility reinforces Saskatchewan's commitment to wind power and alternative energy projects," Crown Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "The expansion of Cypress will also bring important economic development opportunities. With more than 40 per cent of the work expected to have a Saskatchewan component, the project will provide about a $4 million financial injection into the economy."

"The decision to add approximately 5 megawatts of zero emission wind generation through this expansion of the Cypress Wind Power Facility is a result of the tremendous support that customers across the province have shown for SaskPower's GreenPower product," Minister Responsible for the Office of Energy Conservation Peter Prebble said.

GreenPower has been available to all SaskPower customers since April 2002. A 100-kilowatt hour block, available for $2.50/month, is about enough electricity for 20 loads of laundry, or to operate two farm-yard lights for a month. The premium offsets the higher costs to produce GreenPower, compared to coal or natural gas electrical generation. Each block of GreenPower also provides the same positive environmental impact as the planting of 200 trees.

The new turbines are expected to be in service by December. The turbines will be purchased from Vestas Canadian Wind Technologies. Turbine towers will be constructed at the Hitachi Canadian Industries facility in Saskatoon.

SaskPower's nine-turbine Cypress Wind Power Facility is located near Gull Lake and currently produces 6 megawatts (MW) of EcoLogo certified renewable electricity. When this expansion is complete, Saskatchewan will have approximately 22 MW of GreenPower, enough to meet the needs of 9000 households. SaskPower also purchases 11 MW of wind generation from the SunBridge Wind Power Project. SaskPower International is currently reviewing expressions of interest from private sector parties to enter into joint venture arrangements as the corporation develops up to 150 megawatts of wind generation in Saskatchewan.
